I am glad that you are celebrating the anniversary of Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois, the great freedom fighter in this country and the world. Newton: Our Struggle for Self-Determination and World Peace via Black Agenda Report
Left Forum 2017 video: W.E.B DuBois and James Baldwin, the Basis for a New Revolutionary Movement12/7/2017 I am speaking today not as an author, but as an Occupier who stumbled through the events of this book as a 19 year old. Like many of you, I was a member of the Occupy movement. The essays have made me think back to those times, and reflect on what it meant to be a part of a Great Refusal that has had reverberations as far as Larry Krasner’s victory as District attorney.
This book makes me think about what we did right in building a movement that popularized the idea of the 1% vs. the 99%, what we did wrong in not becoming more organically connected to and rooted in working people, especially the black working people who have built this city, and how we can develop ourselves so we can continue what we started. James Arthur Baldwin, along side W.E.B Du Bois, is one of the greatest essayist in the English language. He matters because of his unconditional defense of humanity. He is one of the most original thinkers on racial and social matters. He matters because he uncovered in new and creative ways the workings of the machinery of racism and its pedestrian and predatory day-to-day practices and assumptions. He matters because he rigorously demonstrated, utilizing the standpoint of the oppressed African American people, how modernity engages complexity and difference. He gave us the concepts and language to talk about and begin understanding the oppressive system of white supremacy in holistic ways.
